It’s one of the most common things patients tell us: the anxiety gets worse at night. The moment the day quiets down, the mind speeds up. It replays conversations, rehearses worries, and braces for tomorrow. And then the lack of sleep makes the next day’s anxiety worse, which makes the next night harder to sleep through.
None of this is your imagination, and it’s not a willpower problem. Anxiety and sleep are wired together in the brain, and understanding that connection is often the missing piece in treatment that only addresses one side of it.

A Two-Way Street, Not a Side Effect
It’s tempting to think of poor sleep as just a symptom of anxiety—something that will resolve once the anxiety is under control. In practice, it runs both directions:
- An anxious nervous system stays in a heightened, “on alert” state that makes it hard to downshift into rest.
- Sleep loss, in turn, reduces the brain’s ability to regulate emotional reactivity the next day.
Each night of poor sleep makes the following day’s anxiety a little harder to manage, which makes the next night a little harder to fall asleep. This is part of why “just relax” is such unhelpful advice! The cycle is physiological, not a matter of trying harder.

What Shows Up in the Anxious, Sleepless Brain

When we mapped the brain activity patterns common to anxiety in a previous post, one theme was hemisphere asymmetry—measurable imbalances in brainwave activity that don’t show up on a symptom checklist.
Sleep adds another layer to that picture. Research on generalized anxiety has repeatedly pointed to elevated fast-wave (beta) activity, a pattern associated with a brain that has trouble powering down. This is the neurological version of lying in bed with your mind still racing.
Combine that pattern with the asymmetry we look for in every qEEG, and you start to see why a patient can be exhausted and wide awake at the same time. It isn’t a mystery; it’s measurable.
Why Treating Anxiety and Sleep Separately Often Falls Short
The typical approach treats these as two problems: a sleep aid for the insomnia, a separate medication or therapy track for the anxiety. Sometimes that combination works.
Often, though, patients tell us the sleep issue creeps back the moment they stop the sleep aid, because the underlying hyperarousal driving both problems was never directly addressed.
Treating the symptom on top without addressing the brain activity underneath tends to be a short-term fix rather than a lasting one.
