Understanding MeRT for Autism
What is MeRT?
MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is a noninvasive treatment that uses a combination of brain mapping (EEG) and gentle magnetic stimulation to help the brain work more efficiently. We customize every plan based on each person’s unique brainwave patterns.
How is MeRT different from regular TMS?
Unlike traditional TMS, which delivers the same stimulation pattern to every patient, MeRT takes a personalized approach based on each person’s unique brainwave activity. We use EEG and EKG data to develop an individualized treatment plan.
Is MeRT safe for children with autism?
Yes. MeRT is a well-tolerated, drug-free treatment with a strong safety record. It has been used with children, teens, and adults and is completely noninvasive.
What ages can receive MeRT treatment?
MeRT may be appropriate for young children, teens, and adults. We evaluate every child individually based on their development, history, and brain mapping results to determine if treatment is a good fit.
Autism Treatment Process
What happens during the initial evaluation?
We start with a detailed qEEG and EKG to measure brainwave and heart rhythm patterns. This data helps us create a completely individualized treatment plan for your child.
How long does a typical treatment program last?
Most programs run for 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions held Monday through Friday. Each session lasts about 30 to 45 minutes.
Is the treatment painful?
Not at all. Your child may feel a light tapping sensation on the head during stimulation, but it’s gentle and noninvasive. Most children tolerate sessions very well.
Can I be in the room during sessions?
Yes! We welcome parents to stay in the room to help your child feel calm and supported.
Do we need to stop other therapies during MeRT?
No. MeRT can be used alongside ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and others. Many families tell us they notice even greater improvements when combining therapies.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
When might we see changes?
Many families begin noticing improvements within the first few weeks of treatment. Early changes may include better sleep, improved focus, calmer behavior, and more consistent eye contact or communication.
What kinds of changes are possible?
Parents often report gains in language, emotional regulation, social connection, and daily routines. Some children become more verbal, while others show more independence or awareness.
Will the results last after treatment ends?
MeRT is designed to support long-term brain improvement. Some children benefit from periodic maintenance sessions over time, especially as they grow and develop.
What happens if we can’t complete the full treatment?
We understand that families sometimes need flexibility. If your plans change, we’ll work with you to make adjustments and ensure your child still gets the best support possible.
Cost & Insurance
Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?
Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance nor file it on your behalf. However, we can provide CPT codes and a billing breakdown you may submit to your insurance.
For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (which are FDA-cleared), insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.
What is the cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?
After your child’s evaluation, we’ll go over the full cost of treatment. Pricing can vary depending on the protocol and length of care.
Do you offer payment plans?
We do not, but we’ll work with you to make treatment as accessible as possible.
