For many military families, the path to addressing depression doesn’t follow a straight line. By the time a service member, veteran, or family member begins looking into rTMS therapy, they’ve often tried multiple medications, talk therapy, or both. And they’re looking for an option that works differently.
If you have TRICARE coverage, the good news is that rTMS for Major Depressive Disorder has been a covered benefit since 2016. This guide walks through what TRICARE covers, who qualifies, and what the process looks like when you decide to explore the option.
What rTMS Is—and What It Isn’t
rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-invasive, non-drug therapy that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. It has been FDA-approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder for over a decade.
What rTMS isn’t:
- It is not surgery. No incisions, no implants.
- It is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy). There is no induced seizure, no anesthesia required, and no recovery time after each session.
- It is not a medication. Nothing is ingested or injected, which means no medication side effects and no daily pills.
Sessions are typically 20 to 40 minutes long, performed in our office, and most patients drive themselves home and resume normal activities immediately.
TRICARE Coverage at a Glance

TRICARE has covered FDA-approved rTMS for adults with Major Depressive Disorder since 2016. We work with patients across the full range of TRICARE plans, including:
- TRICARE Prime
- TRICARE Select
- TRICARE for Life
- Coverage for active-duty family members, retirees, and veterans
Coverage specifics vary by plan, beneficiary status, and individual medical circumstances. Our New Patient Coordinator handles benefit verification before any treatment begins, so you’ll know exactly what’s covered and what (if anything) you’ll be responsible for.
General Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for TRICARE-covered rTMS, patients typically need to meet several criteria:
- 18 years of age or older
- A diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder
- Documented history of trying and not improving with antidepressant medications
- Meeting medical safety criteria (certain implanted medical devices and neurological conditions can affect eligibility)
These requirements reflect both clinical best practices and TRICARE’s coverage policy. The “tried and not improved with medication” requirement is sometimes called “treatment-resistant depression.” But in practice, it simply means antidepressants didn’t provide the relief you needed.
If you’re uncertain whether you qualify, that’s exactly the kind of question our New Patient Coordinator is positioned to help answer. She can review your situation, verify your benefits, and explain what documentation may be needed.
What the Process Looks Like

For TRICARE families, the path from inquiry to treatment generally involves four phases.
1. Initial inquiry and benefits verification. A phone call or form submission gets the process started. Our coordinator will gather basic information and contact TRICARE to verify your coverage. This typically takes a few days.
2. Medical evaluation. Before beginning rTMS, you’ll have a comprehensive medical evaluation with a physician to confirm that the treatment is clinically appropriate and that there are no safety concerns. This is also when any required documentation of prior treatments is reviewed.
3. Authorization (if required). Some TRICARE plans require pre-authorization for rTMS. Our team handles the paperwork and follows up with TRICARE on your behalf.
4. Treatment. Once everything is in place, you’ll begin your treatment course. A typical rTMS course involves daily sessions, Monday through Friday, for four to six weeks. Sessions are short, and most patients are able to maintain their normal routines around them.
A Few Practical Notes for Coachella Valley Families
BrainCare Rancho Mirage serves military families across the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas, including those traveling in from outside the immediate region. A few logistics worth knowing:
Location. Our clinic is at 72301 Country Club Drive, Suite 105, in Rancho Mirage. Parking is on-site and free.
Timing. rTMS requires daily sessions for several weeks. For families traveling from farther away, our team can help you plan your schedule to minimize disruption.
Family support. We understand that a depression diagnosis affects the whole family, not just the patient. If a spouse, parent, or other family member is the one initiating the inquiry on a loved one’s behalf, that’s a common starting point. Our coordinator can talk through the situation and help you understand the next steps.
Privacy. All care is provided in accordance with HIPAA privacy standards. If you have specific concerns about how your care information is protected or shared, our team can address them directly before treatment begins.
When rTMS Might Not Be the Right Fit
rTMS is not appropriate for everyone. The most common reasons someone may not be a candidate include:
- Certain implanted medical devices (such as some pacemakers, cochlear implants, or intracranial metal)
- Specific neurological conditions, including a history of seizures
- Pregnancy (case-by-case consideration)
If rTMS isn’t a clinical fit, that doesn’t mean there are no options. It simply means a different conversation about what might work. Our team can help you understand alternative paths or referrals when appropriate.
Taking the Next Step
If you or a family member is considering rTMS therapy, the first step is straightforward: a conversation. Our New Patient Coordinator can verify your TRICARE benefits, explain eligibility, and help you understand what to expect, with no commitment.
